In the wee hours of the morning on Tuesday, a man standing on a bridge over a busy Detroit freeway was ready to take his own life. Thankfully, his guardian angels came to the rescue—and they came in the form of 13 semi-trucks.

No, this isn’t a story about Optimus Prime and the Autobots, but it’s something much more touching.

When Michigan State Police heard about a suicidal man preparing to jump off the Coolidge Highway overpass into traffic on I-696 below, they quickly came up with a genius plan:

They closed off both sides of the interstate and requested truckers stuck in the ensuing jam to drive up to the bottom of the overpass, and park underneath it.

In a matter of minutes, 13 sem-trucks were carefully lined up side by side under the bridge, effectively shortening the suicidal man’s jump.

Negotiators tried to talk the man down while the operation was underway, but to no avail.

The team of drivers sat in their trucks for 3 hours, until the man gave up and eventually walked off the bridge.

The man was later taken to the hospital for psychological evaluation.

Sgt. Jason Brockdorff of the Huntington Woods Police Department said, “That’s a practice we use if we have a jumper.”

“We try to do it every time, to lessen the distance someone would travel if they were to jump. Fortunately, that didn’t happen,” he added.
