Caxmee — known more popularly by her blogger alter ego, “Mama Cax” — was diagnosed with bone & lung cancer at the age of 14, and was given only 3 weeks to live.

But according to her, she beat the odds “with an experimental drug and luck”.

However, surviving cancer had a price: she had to have her right leg amputated. A prosthetic and forearm crutches stand in place of her lost limb.

Now, at 26 years old, Mama Cax lives life with a purpose — with a sense of gratitude, almost.

“I recognize how lucky I am and that many can’t afford medical treatments and people with disabilities as a whole face unparalleled discrimination,” said Mama Cax.

“In many parts of the world, [disabled people] are politically and socially excluded,” she added. “I feel like I’m in a position to make a difference and one day be an advocate for people with disabilities.”

Knowing the wide reach social media has on people, she also uses her blog as a platform to inspire people that though things may be hard now, things will get better if you work hard enough.

“Accomplishing all the goals you set up for yourself will be proof of your success,” she added. “If today doesn’t work the way you planned, let tomorrow be your do-over.”

“Scars; we can hate them all we want but at the end of the day they still remain part of us, they tell our stories of struggle and survival,” Mama Cax said.

“As women we are accustomed to letting others dictate our worth,” she added. “My advice to any young woman out there, know your worth, figure out what you want, set up a plan and go for it.”

What keeps her moving forward? “I think humanity or the lack thereof keeps me moving forward,” she said. “Seeing all the kindness in the world and people who have supported me on my journey makes me feel like I shouldn’t give up.”

Mama Cax is living proof that only we set limitations on ourselves, and therefore we ourselves have the power to break them.
