The town of Elizabeth, New Jersey, was recently saved from a bomb explosion, all thanks to the quick thinking of to two homeless men.

Lee Parker has no home, no job, and no backpack — so when he and his friend Ivan White saw a dumped bag on top of a garbage bin, they decided it was time to replace the trash bag he used to carry his stuff in.

“When I noticed the bag I said, ‘This is fine, I can have this, I can put my lunch in,'” Parker said.

But when they spotted an unsual-looking device inside the trash can, they immediately called the police. “I knew what I was looking at as soon as I saw it,” White said.

“It wasn’t the cartoon bomb with the tick-tock tick-tock, but it had wires,” he explained.

It turns out the bag contained not one but FIVE bombs, which authorities believe to be connected to explosions the day before in New York City and Seaside, New Jersey. Police quickly arrived at the scene and one of the bombs was detonated on site by a bomb squad robot.

Now, the two men are being lauded by their community for their heroic act. A local homeless shelter set up an online fundraiser for both Parker and White.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit a coalition for the homeless. “Had it not been for these heroes, Elizabeth, NJ, would have experienced a devastating terrorist attack,” the organization says on the campaign page. “We are raising money for these two heroes who have done much for our community.”

“Hero? Nah, I won’t go that far,” Parker said, adding he was “just doing the right thing.”

“I’m just glad I was able to realize what the situation was and react in such a way that, thank goodness, no one got hurt,” said White.

Parker, on the other hand, said he’s still looking for a backpack.
