Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg just announced that they’ll be introducing a new feature that we all should have seen coming: a dating service for all the lonely singles.

Mashable

“There are 200 million people on Facebook who list themselves as single, so clearly there’s something to do here,” Zuckerberg said. “Today, we are announcing a new set of features coming soon, around dating.”

This new service was announced at Facebook’s F8 developer conference in San Jose Tuesday.

Simply called “Dating,” this feature will be accessible within the social network’s own app.

Since Facebook already comes with the most critical ingredient of any dating app, an exisiting network of connections, Dating will make background-checking a whole lot easier.

But you will be relieved to know that Facebook users will need to create a separate profile from the main Facebook accounts in order to interact with potential romantic partners.

The two profiles won’t cross, so you can keep your Dating profile secret.

And if you’re worried about matching with friends, Facebook has already thought of that, too. Aside from being a voluntary service, Dating also comes with the added benefits of showing only your first name and not matching you with people who are already on your friends list.

So how does the app work? It identifies single Facebook users who are interested in particular events and groups, and makes their dating profile discoverable to people who may share their tastes.

Dating will also have a dedicated inbox that won’t allow you to send photos or links, as a safety measure. When you’re messaging with someone for the first time, you’re only limited to text-based conversations.

Zuckerberg helped himself to a generous helping of shade, saying: “This is going to be for building real long-term relationships, not just hookups.”

The social network also announced that they will start testing Dating later this year, and, most importantly, that the app won’t use information for ad-generation and targeting.
