Fourteen-year-old Seb Morris, a schoolboy who dreamed of becoming a boxer one day, was found hanged in his bedroom one week after the family had their dog put down.

His devastated mom, Claire Morris, told of how unhappy her son became after their family dog, whose name was Tilly, was put to sleep in November 2017.

She had been Seb’s best friend since he was four years old, and her death really shook him.

Their beloved pet was buried in the family’s backyard in Taunton, Somerset. Seb was said to have stayed at Tilly’s gravesite for an hour afterwards, talking to no one and listening to music on his earphones.

“He also slept with her blanket for the first couple of nights – but then stopped that,” Claire told the inquest. “He said it was too soon, and we didn’t give her enough of a chance to get better.”

The night of the incident, Seb was ‘acting normal’, sparring with Claire’s partner, Paul Few, before going to sleep. In the morning, Claire left the house to take Seb’s siblings to a party. Before she left, she checked in on Seb who was just in his room, wearing pajamas and playing on his iPad.

When she came home on November 18, 2017, she found him hanging in his room.

The teenager had a history of overdosing on paracetamol on two occasions in the months prior but had not sought counselling at his school.

Claire said that her son was a ‘well liked child with a good circle of friends’. He was also training hard to become a boxer.

His mom also told the inquest that Seb had a good relationship with her and the rest of the family, and enjoyed spending time with them. He also considered Paul as the ‘best dad he ever had’.

Paul Few returned the affection. He said: “We are devastated. Words cannot describe our feelings. Seb was so caring and helpful.”

“He was popular and had masses of friends. He was intelligent and would have gone a long way,” he added. “He started boxing 18 months before and aimed to be a professional boxer. He used to go running in the morning and went to boxing training four times a week – he was super fit.”

“Seb enjoyed socialising with his mates at the weekend. If he went out in the evening he’d never let a girl walk home alone.”

“He was a happy boy who’d have a laugh and enjoyed play fighting with me. He was a decent 14 year old.”

Concluding the inquest, Coroner Tony Williams, at Taunton Coroners Court, said: “There is no great background of angst or ongoing problems bearing down on him.”

“I am satisfied that the cause of Seb’s death was hanging – but I don’t have any other evidence with regard to his intentions,” he added.
