In a tragic turn of events, a 40-year-old man was killed by his own mother’s coffin at her funeral in Sulawesi, Indonesia.
As Samen Kondorura and the other pallbearers carried his mother’s coffin to the lakkian—a tower where the dead are placed before the funeral rites are conducted—the makeshift bamboo ladder suddenly gave way.
The grieving son fell off and was crushed by the coffin after it fell on top of him.

The incident occurred in the Parinding valley in the North Toraja district.
Julianto Sirait, chief commissioner of the Tana Toraja police said: “As the mother’s coffin was being raised to the lakkian, suddenly the ladder shifted and collapsed, the coffin fell and hit the victim.”
People in attendance rushed to help Kondorura, but he later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Sirait claimed the accident was due to the ladder not being properly reinforced. The family has chosen not to press charges against the funeral organisers despite this information.
Kondorura has now been laid to rest alongside his mother Berta.
